SZYMON RATAJCZYK – BIOGRAPHY
Szymon Ratajczyk (b. 1989) is a fine art photographer and attorney based in Kalisz, Poland. A law graduate of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, he brings a rare fusion of analytical precision and professional integrity to an artistic practice spanning over a decade.
For Szymon, jazz photography transcends mere reportage; it is an intimate form of portraiture. Eschewing the pursuit of "pretty shots," he searches for psychological truth. His lens is drawn to the human presence within the music: raw emotion, individuality, and the profound symbiosis between the artist, their instrument, and the stage. He is a photographer who doesn’t just look, but listens - capturing fleeting moments where a musician’s expression becomes the sound itself, and light becomes narrative.
His work is highly regarded by both Polish and international jazz communities and has been featured in leading global publications, including Jazz Forum (PL), Jazz Journal (UK), and Modern Drummer (USA). Beyond the lens, Szymon serves as a keen observer and chronicler of the scene; his insightful essays and festival reviews provide a deep narrative context to his visual work, bridging the gap between the vibration of the stage and the stillness of the frame.
Szymon is a two-time laureate (2023, 2024) and five-time finalist (2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024) of the prestigious Marek Karewicz Jazz Photography Competition (MK Jazz Foto). A scholarship holder of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of Poland, his work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, including the Fotoforma Festival in Warsaw, Vivid Gallery in Wrocław, and the 50th International Jazz Pianists Festival in Kalisz.
Today, he collaborates with artists and festivals worldwide, specializing in concert, portrait, and fashion photography that seeks not only visual form, but the rhythmic essence of the subject.
